STATEMENT

THIS IS NOT A MANIFESTO. Film is an art. It is not a half-way point or a poorly adapted cousin to the real thing that the term "film art" tries to straddle. Let us give film the respect it deserves. Movies are cultural artifacts, born out of biases, cultural trends and norms, and a host of sociological factors that make all movies important. Give away the ending is tired of film criticism which goes out of its way to ignore major portions of the film so as not to spoil something. The final product is only a piece of the art and craft that went in to making it, from painting to literature to dance. It is in the work that preceded the final creation, and in fact it is the act of creation that reaps as much reward as the mounted canvas.

Too much emphasis is placed on numerical ratings. What constitutes a five-star ranking? Often that is easier to answer than what constitutes a three-star ranking. It will be very difficult, but let us endeavor to stop refering to a movie as "bad" or "good" and pick a new set of terms. Honest and dishonest. Personal and impersonal. We will define our terms, because nothing- none of our opinions- are absolute.
